The Wauwatosa School District is seeking a full-time (1.0 FTE) Educational Assistant/Aide for Vel R. Phillips School at the Milwaukee County Youth and Family Justice Center.
Position Title: Educational Aide/Assistant FT (1.0)
Department/Location: Vel R. Phillips School at the Milwaukee County Youth and Family Justice Center
Job Classification: Educational Assistant (Non-Exempt)
Reports to: School Principal, Associate Principal
Supervises: N.A.
Position Summary: The Educational Assistant works with students under the supervision of certified teachers to support and services students with disabilities throughout the school day. Duties include providing academic instruction, behavioral supports, supervision, daily living and delegated nursing tasks to students with disabilities.
Anticipated Start Date: August 22, 2022
Anticipated Hours: 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM
Anticipated Pay Rate: The beginning rate for the special education assignment is as follows:
- With DPI special education cert. $16.23 (individuals in this category will be required to obtain a special ed. certification and may apply for reimburse of the license fee of $100 after completing 90 days of employment)
- With DPI teacher certification $18.34
Essential Job Functions:
- Provides support and delivers services to students with disabilities throughout the school day to ensure academic growth, positive social engagement, and access to the school environment
- Assists students with academic work in general education classrooms and small group settings
- Under the supervision of assigned teacher, implements instructional programs and lesson plans for the purpose of presenting and/or reinforcing learning concepts
- Provides physical assistance to students with mobility challenges
- Works collaboratively with special education team
- Delivers direct instructional services, academic supports, and behavioral supports described in IEP’s of students with disabilities
- Assists classroom teacher in performing specific duties as assigned or undertaking specialized tasks to support academic and social success of students
- Adapts classroom activities, assignments, and materials under the direction of the supervising teacher to support and reinforce academic and behavioral goals
- Supports an inclusive educational environment for all students
- Assists special education students requiring daily care (e.g., toileting, diapering, feeding, delegated nursing tasks, etc.)
- Monitors students within a variety of school environments (e.g., cafeteria, bus stop, classroom, restroom, field trips, public transportation, assemblies, kitchen, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a safe and positive learning environment
- Serves as role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings
- Complies with the following requirement: The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the District
- Performs other duties as may be assigned
**Please note: Vel R Phillips is a Milwaukee County owned facility and any Wauwatosa School District staff must adhere to the county mandates regarding COVID-19. Any staff members wishing to teach at Vel R. Phillips MUST be fully vaccinated. (This is not a requirement for Wauwatosa School District but we must adhere to the county mandate for this building only).
- High school diploma
- Experience in correctional setting education programs (preferred)
- Special Education Aide License required or teaching certification through the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction
- Ability to read, comprehend, follow, and give oral and written instructions
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment
- Excellent communication skills
- Experience with the needs of a diverse student population (preferred)
- Experience working with students with disabilities (preferred)
- Academic support experience in the classroom (preferred)
Essential Physical/Mental Requirements:
- Ability to sit or stand for prolonged periods, up to six hours in an eight-hour day
- Ability to perform light physical work, frequently lifting up to thirty pounds without assistance in an indoor setting
- Ability to get down on and up off of the floor independently
- Ability to communicate effectively on the telephone and in person to provide information and assistance
- Ability to move throughout the building and from building to building
- Dexterity and hand/eye coordination necessary to operate computer keyboard and other office equipment such as fax machine, copier, etc.
- Hearing ability adequate to participate in numerous conversations throughout the day, both in person and over the telephone
- Ability to complete job activities in an environment where background noise and frequent interruptions are the norm
- Ability to maintain concentration and focus on tasks requiring timeliness and accuracy
