Position Title: Athletic Director
Department/Location: East & West High School
Job Classification: Select Employee (Exempt)
Reports to: High School Principal
Supervises: Athletic and Extra-Curricular Staff
Position Summary: The Athletic Director provides organizational and operational leadership in the presentation of athletic and extra(co)-curricular opportunities for all students.
Qualifications:
Certification as athletic director, secondary school administrator, recreation administrator or comparable experience
Demonstrated ability and experience in organizational skills, leadership skills, and coaching or supervision of major student extra (co)-curricular activities
Evidence of progressively more responsible leadership with extra-curricular or athletic programming
Essential Job Functions:
Organizes, coordinates and administers the high school and middle school interscholastic and extra (co)-curricular activities, including scheduling, hiring officials and security personnel, arranging transportation, etc.
Recruits and selects coaches for athletic activities.
Hires staff to supervise athletic and co-curricular/club sports events
Oversees work of middle school athletics coordinator to ensure coordination between high school and middle school athletics and promote success of overall K-12 athletics program.
Facilitates positive working relationships between affiliated sports groups, including booster clubs, and affiliated athletic programs (e.g., Jr. Trojan/Jr. Raider sports)
Evaluates coaches and assists in the evaluation of co-curricular activity advisors and provides necessary support in their professional development as it relates to their specific extra duty assignment
Prepares and monitors the high school and middle school athletics/club sports budgets
Arranges for sales of tickets, maintains records of fees, and ensures appropriate accounting and security for all monies received
Coordinates and supervises pre-contest details, including the hiring of officials and supervisors, arrangements for transportation, marking of fields, facilities set-up, inspection of locker rooms, availability of equipment and supplies, and availability of emergency medical care and supplies
Attends all home athletic events when reasonably capable or arranges for other appropriate personnel to provide supervision and direction at the event
Plans and supervises arrangements for WIAA tournament events, including the assignment of chaperones when the tournaments are held at locations that necessitate an overnight stay by athletes and coaches
Monitors the planning and arrangement of approved sports awards programs and banquets
Assists the administration in developing and communicating appropriate rules and regulations governing all athletic and co-curricular activities, including student participation
Ensures that the WIAA and school District policies and procedures regarding student participation are enforced and all records of student conduct and participation eligibility are current and accurate
Works with the high school and middle school administration to provide coordination and oversight of after-school activities and events, including homecoming, prom, club meetings, dances, etc.
Works with District and school administration, the Wauwatosa Recreation Department, and the City of Wauwatosa in the planning, layout, and use of facilities for practices, events, competitions, etc.
Expands professional awareness and understanding of current trends and practices related to athletics and student activities
Coordinates Fitness Center (includes hiring of strength coach, maintenance of equipment, and purchasing needed items)
Manages entire budget for athletic department
Oversees activity accounts, including approving all purchases.
Performs fundraising duties (as needed)
Serves as role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings
Complies with the following requirement: The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the District
Performs other duties as may be assigned
Essential Physical/Mental Requirements:
Ability to sit or stand for prolonged periods, up to six hours in an eight-hour day
Ability to perform light physical work, frequently lifting up to ten pounds without assistance in an indoor setting
Ability to communicate effectively on the telephone and in person to provide information and assistance
Ability to move throughout the building and from building to building
Dexterity and hand/eye coordination necessary to operate computer keyboard and other office equipment such as fax machine, copier, etc.
Hearing ability adequate to participate in numerous conversations throughout the day, both in person and over the telephone
Ability to complete job activities in an environment where background noise and frequent interruptions are the norm
Ability to maintain concentration
