Job Purpose Summary:
The Communications Specialist will work in a collaborative environment with the Marketing and Communications Coordinator as well as with District administrators and school staff to create, distribute, and evaluate the effectiveness of communication to internal and external audiences. Applications need to include three examples of published communications.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Create high-quality communication for all District audiences through a variety of channels including social media, website, email, and print material. Ensure the Sheboygan Area School District (SASD) brand is represented in all communications.
2. Produce a variety of creative content - including photos, videos, graphics, and written pieces - to connect and engage with diverse audiences.
3. Train and support school-based website editors and assist in managing the District website and related database. Collaborate with website editors to produce and ensure website content is current, relevant, and consistent with the District brand.
4. Execute a social media strategy to highlight the District’s strengths and successes in thoughtful and innovative ways, while monitoring and interacting with the online community.
5. Responsible for weather-related cancellation notifications, which require early morning availability.
6. Maintain positive working relationships with principals, department leaders, school office staff, school website editors, and school social media managers, as well as positive engagement with all school staff.
7. Other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
1. Demonstrated ability in effective written communications utilized for email, website, and various media platforms. Possess strong writing and editing skills.
2. Ability to translate strategic information into clear and concise messaging.
3. Ability to manage confidential or crisis situations with sensitivity, professionalism, sense of urgency.
4. An eye for design and the ability to create graphic content for social media and websites.
5. Knowledgeable in social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and LinkedIn, as well as scheduling tools such as Hootsuite.
6. Experience using a website content management system.
7. Self-motivated and highly organized, with keen attention to detail.
8. Ability to work an occasionally varied schedule (such as early mornings, nights, or weekends) to meet the demands of the position.
• Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing, or related field.
• One to three years of successful experience in communications, social media, marketing, or journalism.
