Position Title: Director of Special Education Department/Location: Division of Student and Family Supports Job Classification: Administrator (Exempt) Reports to: Chief of Pupil and Family Services Supervises: Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, School Psychologists, Speech-Language Pathologists, Special Education Teachers (Diagnostician & Program Support), 18-21 Year-Old Services Staff, IEP Coordinator Position Summary: The Director of Special Education works with all certified and uncertified personnel associated with special education in order to improve and facilitate services to students with disabilities PK-12. Qualifications: Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction licenses as director of special education and pupil services Minimum five years teaching/leadership experience in special education Knowledge of research, trends, and best practices in special education Knowledge of state laws, regulations, federal laws, rules, and regulations applicable to special education Administrative leadership skills Expertise in presenting to small and large audiences Ability to communicate effectively with and maintain positive relationships with staff, students, and the public Strong organizational skills Ability to work productively both as a member of a team and independently Strong attention to detail Essential Job Functions: Provide leadership and supervision of special education services to ensure compliance with state and federal special education laws Supervise special education evaluations, reevaluations, and implementation of student IEPs to ensure compliance with state and federal law Recommend policies and establish procedures for implementation and evaluation of approved programs of special education and supportive services Write, implement, and oversee the IDEA grant and related funds Oversee out-of-district placements Oversee and provide consultation on section 504 plans Coordinate special education parent meetings Supervise and evaluate job performance of district nurse, school nurse, occupational therapists, physical therapists, school psychologists, speech-language pathologists, special education teachers (diagnostician & program support), 18-21 year-old services staff, and IEP coordinator, providing direction and assistance for improvement Assist in the supervision of special education teachers and aides, as necessary, and provide direction and assistance for improvement Work cooperatively with building principals and district administrators to resolve issues and ensure effective and efficient provision of special education programs and services Coordinate staff development for special services personnel Communicate with parents and guardians Resolve problems and responds to parental/guardian requests for information or assistance in a timely manner Attend IEP meetings as necessary to resolve issues and ensure appropriate development and implementation of programs and services Assist in the preparation of mandatory reports as necessary Maintain positive relationships with the building administration, parents, other staff, and students Serve as role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings Comply with the following requirement: The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the District Other Job Functions: Participate in curriculum council meetings Prepare and delivers Board presentations related to special education Assist with the hiring of special education staff Perform other duties as may be assigned
