The Communications Coordinator will provide vision and leadership for the organization’s communications and engagement efforts grounded in two-way communication techniques and used as a vehicle to stimulate improved understanding, trust, confidence, and support of the School District of South Milwaukee. Some of the essential functions of the job include: Create, lead and manage the District’s communications and marketing initiatives to include a broad range of networks that support formal and informal organization-level, engagement pathways. Evaluate the effectiveness of the District’s communications and marketing initiatives. Develop strategies to ensure consistency of message throughout the District to enhance commitment to the District’s mission, goal, school improvement, and accountability. Provide public relations strategy leadership with the District’s administrators with a focus on proactive problem-solving. Responds to media inquiries in alignment with District protocol. Services as the District liaison to the news media, including development of news releases. Maintain an understanding and awareness of community attitudes, interests and concerns as they relate to SDSM performance, activities and finances. Assist the District administration in anticipating and influencing community perceptions, opinions, media coverage, and public relations outcomes. Oversee the direction and content of the District website and social media networks including guiding the development and capabilities of school websites. Advance the District’s social media presence in coordination with the social media coordinators. Create, supervise, and coordinate the preparation of District publications, newsletters, calendar, articles, marketing resources, and annual school district report. Oversee the District’s branding strategy.
Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in communications, public relations, or journalism. Experience in the development and implementation of communication/marketing programs. Experience serving public sector organizations in a communications leadership capacity. Ability to communicate, both verbally and in writing, and interact in a positive, professional manner with the School Board, administrators, staff, District parents, community, students, news media, other stakeholders, and those supervised. Advanced understanding and use of current technologies, including social media. Ability to read and interpret documents such as District policies and procedures, federal, state, and DPI publications, and routine operating and maintenance instructions for the purpose of communicating complex information to the general public. Ability to maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students, staff, and other confidential information. Strong organizational skills, including the ability to plan and carry out projects and duties and prioritize tasks in order to meet deadlines. Ability to make reasonable, independent judgments and decisions. Ability to create and edit written materials with a high degree of accuracy and to create a powerful and clear message. Such additional or alternative qualifications that are deemed necessary and appropriate for the position.
